The Bridge Ledger The Bridge Ledger One of the more interesting side roads to come out of my Eric Sloane research has been covered bridges. Sloane treated them as more than picturesque relics. They were working pieces of American engineering: timber trusses protected by roofs and siding, built to carry people, wagons, livestock and commerce across rivers long before modern bridge design took over. Richard Sanders Allen spent decades documenting them, while Sloane helped explain why they mattered. So I built a tool for exploring that world. The Bridge Ledger is a searchable, zoomable reference atlas containing more than a thousand covered-bridge locations across the United States and Canada, along with additional historical crossings, lost bridges and archival research.
